Swallowtail Butterfly

swallowtailWith an abundance of wildflowers in Northeast Texas we are blessed with a good butterfly population. This swallowtail is feeding on a Lantana flower in our garden. The Lantana draws many species of butterflies. We seem to get mostly swallowtails, fruitillaries, and skippers. This fall we also had migrating monarch butterflies sharing the Lantana flowers with the swallowtail butterflies.

Youth Rodeo

youth rodeoMany of the Cowboy Churches have their own rodeo arenas. They periodically hold youth rodeos as a way of passing on cowboy skills and values. Young cowboys and cowgirls compete in age bracket events.

Wolfe City Red Barn

wolfe city red barnThe Wolfe City red roofed barn was built by J. Green. It was used as a livestock auction barn. This piece of Wolfe City, TX history was recently torn down after many attempts at raising funds to restore it failed.

Painted Bunting

painted buntingThe Painted Bunting is the most colorful of North American birds. They are a migratory bird that winters in Mexico. They nest in the thickets on our place and feed primarily on seeds on the ground. The Painted Buntings are  fond of the seeds of the Texas dandelion that cover our pastures.

Sampson a Classic Champagne Quarter Horse

sampsonSampson is a Classic Champagne color quarter horse stallion. He has spotted another stallion and is ready to protect his territory. The classic champagne color is the result of breeding a black horse with a horse that carries the dilute champagne color gene.

Fox Squirrel

fox squirrelThe Fox Squirrel is common in North Central Texas. A little further east where there are pine trees you find Grey Squirrels. In our area  Native Pecan trees and Oak trees keep these guys well fed. The abundance of nuts doesn’t stop them from raiding our bird feeders for sunflower seeds.
